Csaba Szabó (1936-2003)
Four-movement composition. As the titles of the first and third movements suggest (Quarter-tone melody, Quarter-tone harmony), the use of microtonal intervals is fundamental to the musical language of the work.
In the second movement (Cowbells), the cello has to imitate the actual sounding cowbells. In the last movement (Finale), in addition to the various forms of sound, the composer also requires the performer to use the „ütőgardon” effects.
The movements where the instrumentalist is required to sing are particularly experiential. It is not the unusual nature of the task that stands out, but rather the harmony in which the vox humana and the cello voice are united.
The musical world of the work is a synthesis of the contemporary techniques conquered so far, the rubato and giusto characters of folk music conception, and new attempts to further enrich the sound palette.
